Tarum Natural Dye

In a research conducted by Mr. I Made Arsana Yasa from 1998 to 2001, he discovered five base types of plants for natural color dyeing. These plants include Umbrella tree leaves that produce black color, mango leaves that create yellow color, mahogany leaves that yield brown, Indigofera leaves that produce blue or indigo color, and Sappan Wood that creates red color. By combining these 5 plants, various other colors can be produced. Currently, Trump has produced more than 500 types of colors. However, the process to produce color extracts takes longer than normal dyeing. It involves chopping the leaves, drying them, and boiling them for 7 to 8 hours to obtain the color extract. Nonetheless, leaves are the main ingredient used in the natural color dyeing process due to their availability, ease of extracting color, and no need to cut down trees, allowing them to grow, and the leaf waste can be used as compost.

How Tarum Make The Colour?

After the leaves are harvested from our plantation, they are separated from their stems. The separated part of the leaves will be processed into smaller pieces. Then, the leaves are put into a large pot and water is poured in. The boiling process of the leaves in the water will take 7-8 hours. Traditional firing techniques are used and wood waste is utilized in this process. After the boiling and resting process, the extract will be filtered. The liquid extract will be transferred to a storage place, while the waste from the boiling process will be returned to the plantation to become compost.
